An electric boom? Allstar take a closer look at UK EV sales

Rich Smith

Allstar, our official Fleet Partners for World EV DayTM, have recently looked into the latest report from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), with some fantastic results for electric vehicles (EV)!

The SMMT said the demand for battery electric cars was such that a new one was registered every 60 seconds in the month, and predicted that this will accelerate to one every 50 seconds by the end of the year, and up to one every 40 seconds by the end of 2024.

As such, electric vehicles (including those with hybrid components) amounted to 35.4% of the new vehicle market up till July but what was really impressive was the strength of pure electric sales which amounted to 16% of the total electric vehicle sales, representing an 87.6% increase and thus becoming the strongest driver for EV adoption.

There were positive signs of this happening within charging infrastructure as well, as a record high of 3,056 new standard public chargers were installed, claimed to be equal to one new charger for every 35 new plug-in vehicles registered. The SMMT called this a “significant improvement” on the same quarter last year, when the ratio was one for every 58 cars.
